Pegasus is a winged horse. According to ancient Greek myth, Pegasus was born from the body of the Gorgon Medusa after Perseus cut off her head. Pegasus was tamed by the son of Poseidon Bellerophon and with his help he defeated the monster Chimera.
According to legend, Pegasus flew faster than the wind. He had a stall in Corinth, Pegasus lived in the mountains. He spent most of his time on Parnassus in Phokis and Helikon in Boeotia. When Mount Helikon, having heard the wondrous singing of the Muses, was ready to rise to the sky, by the will of Poseidon, Pegasus struck with his hoof at its top and stopped growth.
Pegasus could knock out springs with a hoof strike on the ground. From the blow of the hoof of Pegasus on Mount Helikon, not only the growth of the mountain stopped, but also the source of Hippocrene (Key of the Horse) arose, from which poets drew inspiration. Hence the expression "saddle a Pegasus" - "to become a poet, to speak in verse, to be in a state of inspiration."
The constellation is named after Pegasus. Only the "star Pegasus" does not have wings.
